7 tankers drop anchor off Singapore after US hits Russian oil with sanctions

Seven oil tankers have dropped anchor off Singapore after the US imposed sanctions on Russian oil producers.

Last Friday (Jan 10), the US Treasury announced new sanctions on major Russian oil producers Gazprom Neft as well as Surgutneftegas, and 183 vessels that ship oil.

After the announcement, at least 65 oil tankers stopped at multiple locations, according to Reuters.

Those included seven which dropped anchor off Singapore as at Monday, Reuters indicated, citing MarineTraffic and LSEG ship-tracking data. In this region, there were another five which stopped off Chinese ports.

These 183 vessels are part of the so-called Russian “shadow fleet” that have skirted around existing sanctions on the country’s energy exports, the US Treasury noted.

The Business Times has reached out to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore for a response.
