IIM Bangalore vs IIM Mumbai: Who leads the placement race?

Two of India’s premier management institutes, the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore and the Indian Institute of Management Mumbai are dream schools for many aspiring management students. In the NIRF Rankings 2024 (management category) IIM Bangalore has grabbed the second spot while IIM Mumbai has grabbed the sixth position. In fact, since 2021, both the institutes have found a spot in the top 10 institutes under the management category.So, what sets these institutes apart? Beyond their distinguished faculty, advanced courses, research facilities, and impressive campuses, one major differentiator is their placement records. Today, we will compare which of these esteemed IIMs excels more in terms of placements.

Placement Records: A comparative between IIM Bangalore and IIM Mumbai

In a comparative analysis of the placement data for IIM Bangalore and IIM Mumbai over the past three academic years for PG 2 Year Programme, both institutes show a consistent rise in median salaries for their PG 2-year programmes. IIM Bangalore had 436 students placed in 2020-21 with a median salary of ₹25 lakh, which increased to ₹33 lakh for 502 graduates in 2022-23. In contrast, IIM Mumbai started with 519 graduates in 2020-21 earning a median salary of ₹25.8 lakh, which rose to ₹32 lakh for 490 students in 2022-23. While both institutes saw improvements in salaries, IIM Bangalore had a sharper salary increase, particularly between 2021-22 and 2022-23, reaching a median of ₹33 lakh, compared to IIM Mumbai’s ₹32 lakh. Despite a slight drop in student numbers in 2022-23, both schools maintained strong placement outcomes, with IIM Bangalore consistently achieving higher median salaries.
