Every year, the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test PG (NEET PG) witnesses a substantial number of MBBS graduates vying for postgraduate medical seats. In 2024, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare disclosed to the Lok Sabha that the number of PG medical seats has escalated by an impressive 127% over the last decade. This surge is pivotal in addressing the burgeoning demand for specialized medical education and healthcare professionals across the country.
According to government data, the tally of NEET PG seats has surged from 31,185 before 2014 to a commendable 70,645 at present.This significant augmentation underscores the concerted efforts to fortify the medical education infrastructure and cater to the evolving healthcare needs of India’s populace.
Amidst the fluctuations in NEET PG 2024 exam dates, the latest update from the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) confirms the examination to be held on June 23. Despite the logistical challenges, the commitment to conducting the examination remains steadfast, ensuring a fair opportunity for aspiring medical professionals nationwide.
The amplification in medical seats is not confined to PG courses alone. The total count of medical colleges has burgeoned by 82%, soaring from 387 before 2014 to an impressive 706 as of February 2024. This exponential growth signifies a concerted push towards bolstering the healthcare infrastructure and nurturing a robust cadre of medical practitioners.
Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya highlighted the strides made in augmenting medical education through initiatives like the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS). This scheme has facilitated the establishment of 157 new medical colleges, with 108 already operational. Additionally, the recognition of Diplomate of National Board (DNB) qualification for teaching faculty appointments signifies a multifaceted approach to address faculty shortages and enhance educational standards.
NEET PG Seats 2024: A State-wise Breakdown
A comprehensive analysis of NEET PG seats across various states delineates the distribution of PG medical seats in government and private medical colleges. Maharashtra leads the tally with 3,576 PG seats in government medical colleges, while Karnataka offers the highest number of 4,593 PG seats in private medical colleges.
