The Ministry of Education has announced the ninth edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 today, August 12. In the Engineering category, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has retained the top position. This year, IIT Delhi secured the second spot, while IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Kharagpur are ranked third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.
These institutions were evaluated based on five parameters set by the Ministry of Education: Teaching, Learning and Resources, Research and Professional Practices, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception.

Comparison
While the top four rank holders remained unchanged from last year, there was a shift in the fifth and sixth positions. In 2023, the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee held Rank 5, while the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur was in sixth place. However, this year, IIT Kharagpur moved up to Rank 5, pushing IIT Roorkee down to Rank 6.
Meanwhile, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, and National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli consistently secured Ranks 7, 8, and 9 in both 2023 and 2024.
Notably, this year, the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi secured Rank 4, displacing Jadavpur University from the top 10. Last year, IIT BHU was ranked 15th.
Other details
The NIRF ranking was issued online in the presence of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and other dignitaries. This year, the total number of categories for ranking has increased from 13 to 16. New categories, such as Open Universities, State Universities, and Skill Universities, have been introduced for the 2024 rankings.
