In the wake of the current situation in Bangladesh, the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has permitted Bangladeshi students who have passed out to stay in campus hostels without any fees until the situation in their home country improves. The University has also decided to offer support to the students in all possible ways.
The decision was made to support students who, having completed their studies, were required to vacate their hostels as per university regulations.Professor S. V. S. Raju, Coordinator of the International Centre, declared that the University will offer assistance to the Bangladeshi students facing problems returning to their homes. Students who choose to stay in hostels will be allowed to do so, with the University covering all associated expenses.

Bangladesh student protest against quota: Here is what we know so far
- Students started protesting on the streets in July in opposition to a High Court ruling that reinstated a 30 percent job quota for descendants of freedom fighters.
- The demonstrations intensified on July 16, which led to a curfew, and shoot on sight order.
- To quell the protests, Bangladesh’s Supreme Court scaled back the controversial quota system, lowering the quota from 30 percent to 5 percent.
- The then Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina rejected the students’ demands, citing ongoing court proceedings, which intensified the unrest.
- She also referred to the protesters as “Razakars,” a term for collaborators with the Pakistani military during the 1971 War of Independence. This labeling enraged students, leading them to vacate their dormitories at Dhaka University and launch widespread protests.
- The furious students began demanding the resignation of Sheikh Hasina and her Cabinet after she labeled them as terrorists and urged people to “suppress them with a firm hand.”
- Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country on August 5, Monday. according to reports. Thousands of protesters invaded her residence, while millions took to the streets to celebrate her departure.
- General Waker-Uz-Zaman, the Chief army of Bangladesh declared that the then PM Sheikh Hasina has resigned from her post and an interim government will be formed by the military. Muhammad Yunus has been appointed as the Chief Advisor to the interim government.
- As per media reports, the aircraft carrying Sheikh Hasina touched down at Hindon Airbase in Delhi around 5:39 PM on Monday. The report further suggests that she will likely leave for the UK shortly.
