BT’s Ang Guangzheng wins Experiential Treat prize at SGX Orb Awards

THE Business Times’ Ang Guangzheng took home the Experiential Treat award on Thursday (Sep 5) at this year’s Singapore Exchange (SGX) Orb Awards, which recognise excellence in financial news and content.

Ang, head of video at BT, won for his piece “13 blue-chip stocks to track after Budget 2024”. It was a joint win with CNA Money Mind’s Seah Su-Lyn.

The short and snappy video delved into the Straits Times Index constituents across six sectors that were expected to benefit from Singapore’s Budget 2024 announcements.

BT editor Chen Huifen said: “This win is an encouragement to BT’s video team and the larger newsroom for our efforts in trying to reach our audiences in multiple platforms. We will endeavour to meet our audiences’ needs as their news consumption habits change and expectations evolve.”

Commenting on the win, Ang credited the others who also worked on the piece: “This video is really a team victory and effort. I wrote the script from (BT journalist) Mia Pei’s story, (BT video journalist) Ellyani Hanis came up with an eye-catching thumbnail design, and (former BT video journalist) Megan Ng did a simple but effective edit.

“I’m so glad for the award and hope that it’ll drive the team to create more interesting and fresh content to surprise both new and old readers of BT.”

The Experiential Treat category, in which BT’s team came out tops, is for all things creative and experiential. The winner is the one who delivers a compelling story and offers viewers an experience to remember, SGX said on its website.

In the latest edition of the annual awards, the Story of the Year prize went to Nicole Lim of The Edge Singapore for her story, “Creator Economy: The New Kings and Queens of Content”.

The publication’s Khairani Afifi Noordin bagged the Hidden Gem award, for her piece, “Too heavy a price for sin stocks?”. The award seeks to honour the best feature or analysis of an under-covered stock listed on SGX.

The Special Category award went to Jovi Ho from The Edge Singapore for his story, “Investing for impact? Learn these lessons from ESG investing”.

Lianhe Zaobao’s Sunday column, The Wealth Brocade Pouch, took home TheGoTo prize, the award for the best digital platform that enhances financial education. BT’s young-audience initiative Thrive was also nominated in this category.

Submissions for this year’s awards were reviewed by an independent panel of judges comprising Adrienne Teh, managing director at 65 Equity Partners; Bill Herder, head of the Asia-Pacific at FIA; Chris Wright, former Asia editor of Euromoney and co-founding partner of Resonate Global Advisors; and Joe Yan, operating partner of Granite Asia.

Teo Ai June, head of marketing and communications at SGX, said: “We extend our congratulations to the winners and finalists, who impressed the judges with the high quality of their work.”
