For the purpose of fostering competences in learners, the curriculum encompasses seven major learning areas, which are: Languages, Humanities, Mathematics, Sciences, Skill Subjects, General Studies and Health and Physical Education.These areas are broadly divided into electives and compulsory areas as detailed below;
Classes 11 and 12 constitute a unified course. Students are required to select only those subjects in Class 11 that they intend to pursue in Class 12. In Class 11, students have the option to choose a minimum of 5 or more subjects, which they must continue in Class 12.
► In Class 11 & 12, students are required to study either Hindi or English as one of their two language subjects.
► Students have the option to select either English Core (Code-301) or English Elective (Code-001), or alternatively, Hindi Core (Code-302) or Hindi Elective (Code-002). It is not permissible to offer a language at both the core and elective levels.

According to the curriculum, State Boards decide which textbooks are used for classes 11 and 12 in regional languages. Schools are asked to inform CBSE of any changes made by State Boards at the beginning of the school year. Schools must strictly follow CBSE-mandated textbooks. Changes will only be made after CBSE notification, and schools are responsible for any issues arising from disobeying the board’s instructions.
