Delhi HC Orders CBI Inquiry into UPSC Aspirants’ Deaths, Slams MCD and Police – Times of India

UPSC Coaching Centre Deaths: In a significant escalation of the investigation into the tragic deaths of three UPSC aspirants in a coaching center basement, the Delhi High Court on Friday ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the case. The court expressed grave concerns about the incident and suspected potential corruption by public servants.
To ensure a thorough and impartial probe, the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has been tasked with appointing a senior officer to monitor the CBI’s investigation.
Parallel Legal Proceedings
Meanwhile, a parallel legal battle is unfolding in the Delhi’s Tis Hazari court. The court has issued a notice to the Delhi Police on a plea seeking the preservation and production of CCTV footage related to the incident. This petition was filed by Manuj Kathuria, the SUV driver who was earlier arrested in connection with the case but later granted bail. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on August 7.
High Court’s Scathing Criticism
The Delhi High Court has previously expressed its deep dissatisfaction with the authorities’ handling of the case. The court questioned the MCD‘s role in the tragedy, demanding to know why officials failed to address the issue of non-functional storm water drains in the area.
In a scathing remark, the court criticized the Delhi Police for arresting an innocent bystander while seemingly ignoring the negligence of civic authorities. The bench emphasized the need for accountability and stressed that such incidents cannot be treated lightly.
As the CBI takes over the investigation, hopes are high that the agency will be able to uncover the truth behind the tragic deaths and bring those responsible to justice.
