Gardens by the Bay expands solar power system in renewable energy push

It completes the installation of over 1,700 solar panels with a total capacity of 1.08 megawatt-peak

[SINGAPORE] Local horticulture and urban park Gardens by the Bay has completed the installation of solar photovoltaic systems with renewable energy company EDP.

The upgraded overall system features more than 1,700 solar panels with a total capacity of 1.08 megawatt-peak.

The newly expanded system generates clean, renewable energy to power part of the park’s operations, in a move towards a more sustainable and greener future.

The expansion and enhancement of solar infrastructure was carried out across Gardens by the Bay including the Supertree Grove, and new sites such as the Canopy and the Bayfront Pavilion.

EDP took into consideration inputs from Gardens by the Bay, leveraging specialised expertise in installation design to maximise energy generation across unique spaces while balancing safety, plant life, aesthetic integrity and operational logistics.

These spaces include the Supertrees, which have irregular surfaces and shapes that make mounting solar panels more complex than on standard rooftops or flat land.

Miguel Fonseca, chief executive officer of EDP Renewables Apac, said in a statement on Thursday (Aug 21) that the initiative sets a new technical standard for solar deployment in land-constrained environments.

“Singapore continues to be at the forefront of sustainable urban development, and this project demonstrates how innovative architectural design can be transformed into a powerful source of clean energy.”

He added that the initiative is aligned with Singapore’s national sustainability ambitions, while showcasing how every surface can serve a greater purpose.

The venture was executed through Singapore-headquartered EDP Renewables Apac, under a power purchase agreement, said EDP. It added that the contract with Gardens by the Bay serves to advance the park’s renewable energy adoption as part of its sustainability drive to future-proof the Gardens.
