GE2025: Workers’ Party’s Andre Low, Eileen Chong to fill NCMP seats

[SINGAPORE] Workers’ Party (WP) candidates Andre Low and Eileen Chong will fill the two available Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) seats in Singapore’s next Parliament, the Elections Department (ELD) announced on Monday (May 19).

The two were among the best-performing losing candidates in the May 3 general election.

Low, who took 48.53 per cent of the vote in Jalan Kayu SMC against labour chief Ng Chee Meng, will take one seat for having garnered the highest vote share among unelected opposition candidates.

Chong was picked by the WP to fill the second seat. She was part of the party’s five-member Tampines GRC team, which took 47.37 per cent of the vote in a four-way fight – the second-highest share achieved by unelected opposition candidates.

The other WP candidates for Tampines were former Aljunied GRC MP Faisal Manap, Michael Thng, Ong Lue Ping and Jimmy Tan.

The returning officer wrote to the Tampines team on May 9, asking for a decision by May 19, said ELD in the statement. The group informed the returning officer of its decision on May 18.

The WP candidates were up against a PAP team helmed by Minister for Social and Family Development Masagos Zulkifli and comprising incumbents Baey Yam Keng, and Koh Poh Koon, as well as first-time candidates David Neo and Charlene Chen.

Under the NCMP scheme, up to 12 seats are offered to the opposition. As the WP won 10 elected seats, there were two NCMP seats up for grabs this time.

In a statement after the announcement, the party said: “All WP MPs will carry forward the Workers’ Party’s longstanding mission to represent the interests of all Singaporeans, hold the government to account, and advance reasoned, principled debate in Parliament.”
