Haryana summer vacation 2024: The Haryana government has rescheduled the summer vacation for all schools, both government and private, in response to the ongoing severe heatwave. The summer break will now commence on May 28 and last till June 30, 2024. Initially, the holidays were supposed to start from June 1. However, due to extreme weather conditions, the vacation period has been changed and will now span from May 28 to June 30, 2024.
On May 27, The Directorate School Education, Government of Haryana posted on X about the changed date. “All government and private schools in the state will remain closed from May 28, 2024, to June 30, 2024. All teachers must ensure that holiday homework is given to students today, on May 27, 2024,’’ reads the post.

This decision affects all educational institutions across the state and mandates the closure of schools during this period. Teachers have been instructed to provide holiday homework to students by May 27 to ensure continuity in their learning.
As mentioned earlier, summer vacation was supposed to commence in Haryana schools from June 1, 2024. A previous notice by the Directorate School Education, dated 17th May 2024, reads, “As per the Haryana Directorate School Education, all government and private schools of the state shall be closed for summer vacations from June 1 to June 30, 2024’’. The order further said that all schools will be opened as before from July 1.

Haryana school timings changed
Additionally, the state government had also revised school timings in light of the heatwave, which was effective from May 18. Till May 31, single-shift schools have been operating from 7 AM to 12 PM. For double-shift schools, the first shift timing is 7 AM to 11:30 AM, with the second shift timed between 11:45 AM and 4:15 PM. These adjustments aim to minimize exposure to peak afternoon temperatures, thereby, safeguarding the health and well-being of students and staff.
Summer vacation in Gurugram schools
In a related move, all schools in Gurugram were ordered to shut down from May 27 to May 31 due to the extreme heatwave. For Gurugram schools, the summer vacation will officially start on June 1 and will conclude on June 30, with classes resuming on July 1.
Summer vacations rescheduled in other states
Several states across India are struggling with intense heat waves. Various state governments have announced the early commencement of summer vacations for schools in these states to ensure the safety and well-being of students. The decision is applicable to both government and private schools.
The heatwave affecting these states is part of a broader weather pattern impacting several parts of India. According to AIR, the Meteorological Department had predicted a heatwave in pockets of Punjab, Haryana-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, East Rajasthan, Gujarat, Saurashtra, and Kutch. These regions are experiencing soaring temperatures, often exceeding 40 degree Celsius, posing significant health risks, particularly for young children. Consequently, summer vacations have also been rescheduled in these regions.
