Indian student enrolments in New Zealand have surged by nearly 50 percent since 2023, signalling a strong rebound in international education. Between January and April 2025, more than 63,000 international students were enrolled with New Zealand education providers, representing a 16 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024. Education New Zealand’s latest survey highlights how visa reforms, work opportunities, and quality education are major factors attracting Indian students to the country.Streamlined visa processes and enhanced work rightsOne of the primary drivers behind the increase is New Zealand’s fast-track visa system, which now approves applications in about 12 days. This quick turnaround is a distinct advantage compared to longer waiting periods in countries such as Canada or the UK. According to Education New Zealand, this development has “built confidence in the system” for Indian students seeking to study abroad.Additionally, the extension of post-study work rights has made New Zealand an attractive destination. Indian students are now permitted to work up to 25 hours per week during term time, allowing them to balance study with earning opportunities. These work rights address both financial needs and career aspirations, making New Zealand more competitive in the international education market.Education quality and cost-effectivenessNew Zealand offers high-ranking universities with courses aligned to sectors in demand, especially those on the government’s Green List, which highlights skill shortages. This targeted approach appeals to Indian students looking for clear career pathways after graduation.Cost is another important factor. Tuition fees in New Zealand are competitive compared to other Western countries, and some cities offer affordable living expenses. Scholarships such as the NZ$10,000 awards for high-achieving students further encourage enrolment from India.
Shifting source countries and subsector growthChina and India continue to be the top source countries for international students in New Zealand. Other notable countries include Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, the US, Nepal, the Philippines, Thailand, and Germany. Sri Lanka and Nepal have moved up the rankings, reflecting shifting student mobility patterns.All education subsectors have seen growth, but Private Training Establishments (PTEs) experienced the largest increase, with enrolments rising by 41 percent compared to 2024.
