NIRF Rankings 2024: The Ministry of Education has released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 rankings, unveiling the top-performing universities in India. The much-anticipated rankings were announced on 12th August 2024, with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, securing its place as the best university in the country.This marks yet another achievement for IISc, which has consistently held a top spot in previous rankings.
New Categories and Future Plans
This year’s NIRF rankings introduced three new categories: Open Universities, Skill Universities, and State-Funded Government Universities. Additionally, during the announcement, AICTE chairperson Anil Sahasrabudhe revealed plans to introduce a ‘Sustainability Ranking’ category next year, reflecting the growing importance of environmental responsibility in higher education.
Top 10 Universities in NIRF 2024
In its ninth edition, the NIRF rankings continue to provide a comprehensive assessment of higher education institutions across the country, evaluating them based on various parameters, including teaching, learning, and resources (TLR), research and professional practice (RP), graduation outcomes (GO), outreach and inclusivity (OI), and perception (PR).
1. Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru: Topping the list, IISc Bengaluru continues to be the premier institution in India, renowned for its cutting-edge research and academic excellence. The institute’s focus on innovation, research, and a strong faculty has kept it at the forefront of higher education in India.
2. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi: JNU has maintained its position as a leading institution for higher education in the humanities and social sciences. Known for its strong academic programs and vibrant campus life, JNU has been consistently ranked among the top universities in the country.
3. Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi: Climbing up the ranks, JMI has been recognised for its diverse academic offerings and a strong emphasis on research. The university’s efforts in fostering an inclusive and innovative academic environment have earned it the third spot in the NIRF 2024 rankings.
4. Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal: A private institution that has steadily risen through the ranks, Manipal Academy of Higher Education is known for its emphasis on global education standards and a strong focus on research and development.
5. Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi: BHU remains one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in India, offering a wide range of academic programs. Its commitment to preserving traditional Indian knowledge systems while integrating modern education practices has helped it retain a top position.
6. University of Delhi, New Delhi: The University of Delhi continues to be a favoured destination for students across the country. Known for its wide array of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, Delhi University’s strong academic framework has placed it among the top universities.
7. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore: Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has been recognised for its outstanding contribution to education and research. The university’s interdisciplinary approach and strong industry partnerships have been pivotal in its rise in the rankings.
8. Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh: AMU continues to be a significant player in Indian higher education, known for its rich cultural heritage and academic excellence. The university has made considerable strides in research and innovation, maintaining its place among the top universities.
9. Jadavpur University, Kolkata: Jadavpur University is celebrated for its robust research output, particularly in engineering and technology. The university’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation has ensured its place in the top ten.
10. Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Vellore: VIT, a private university, has consistently been ranked among the top engineering institutions. Its emphasis on research, industry collaboration, and student-centric education has contributed to its strong position in the NIRF rankings.
