The number of Michelin-star shutterings hits double digits; one-starred restaurant Jag loses head chef, but the business continues
[SINGAPORE] One-Michelin-starred restaurant Euphoria has added its name to the list of high-end restaurants that have closed, following in the footsteps of fellow one-star restaurant Alma by Juan Amador, which announced its closure less than two weeks ago.
Euphoria’s chef-owner Jason Tan confirmed market talk about its closure in a social media post on Friday (Aug 8). Before the announcement, the restaurant had already disabled its reservations page, and its premises on Tras Street were closed on days it was meant to be open.
Tan, who earned his first Michelin star at Corner House before striking out on his own with Euphoria five years ago, told The Business Times that he had been thinking about closing for almost a year. He added that while business was slow, the restaurant was still “decent” and that the reasons for closing were personal.
“I’ve already achieved my personal goals, including being ranked in Asia’s 50 Best (guide) and receiving the Michelin Guide’s star recognition for nine years. I’ve been cooking for over 20 years and I would like to take a break.”
He already has other projects in the works, as “I’ve already been approached by two separate investors who are potentially interested in opening a nice, casual concept. I have also been asked to be a culinary consultant for a restaurant and hotel project.”
In this year’s Michelin Guide, eight one-star restaurants were dropped from the list due to closures. Alma and Euphoria’s closures bring the number to 10 – the first time that Michelin closures have hit double digits.
Meanwhile, Jeremy Gillon, executive chef-owner of the one-starred restaurant Jag, announced on social media that he was stepping down from his role after seven years. He told BT that he planned to spend some time in France for a creative recharge and refresh.
But the restaurant will continue business as usual with the existing team at its STPI location in Robertson Quay.
Fine-dining Japanese restaurant Imamura also announced its impending closure a week ago, making it the third high-end eatery to call it quits in the past month.
