Earlier on August 21, the Tripura government had declared school closure on August 21 and 22 due to extreme weather conditions in the State.
According to an ANI report, the Additional Secretary, Education (School) Department, Govt. of Tripura, said, “Due to the present weather conditions like heavy rainfall/flood/ landslide etc in the State, it has been decided that all schools like Govt., Govt. Aided schools, Privately managed schools, schools under TTAADC, Madrasas, etc throughout the state shall remain closed on August 21 and 22.” The order further mentioned, “ “All the District Education Officers are hereby instructed to convey this decision to every school under their jurisdiction.”
Tripura CM on school closure
On August 21, Saha took to Twitter and wrote, “Spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and briefed him on the current situation arising out of severe flood situation. I also requested to dispatch additional NDRF teams to support our response efforts. The Home Minister assured me of all possible support during this crisis. I am grateful to him for providing all possible support to us at this hour.”
He had formally requested Union Home Minister Amit Shah also to deploy additional NDRF teams to aid in the ongoing emergency response. The appeal seeks to enhance the state’s efforts in managing the severe environmental conditions affecting the region.
Through his social media posts, Saha urged social organisations, NGOs, and all citizens to stay active and provide assistance amid this environmental crisis. “Your every iota of contribution can make a significant difference to the response and relief efforts,” reads his social media post.
The CM stated that officials from the district administration across various districts, along with the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), SDRF (State Disaster Response Force), and local authorities, are on high alert and actively collaborating to offer aid and support to those in the flood-affected areas.
Tripura Grapples with Extreme Weather Conditions
According to a TNN report, incessant rains since Tuesday have triggered landslides and drowning incidents in Tripura, claiming at least 10 lives. Seven people lost their lives in landslides on Tuesday, while three more fatalities were reported on Wednesday, including one due to drowning, as the state battles with extreme weather conditions.
The flood situation has worsened across several districts, including South Tripura, Gomati, West Tripura, Khowai, and Unakoti, after heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours.
Reports reveal that embankment walls along rivers in North Tripura, Unakoti, and Khowai have been breached under the intense pressure of floodwaters, inundating towns and residential areas. Over 6,000 families have been evacuated to relief camps across the state. Central Agartala, including the Chief Minister’s personal residence, is entirely submerged.
IMD Weather Forecast for Tripura for Next 24 hour
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast for Tripura over the next 24 hours, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extreme downpours in South Gomati, Sipahijala, and Dhalai districts. Other regions across the state may also experience heavy rainfall. Thunderstorms with lightning are expected in isolated areas throughout Tripura.
