University of Essex Introduces Dual Award Nursing Masters: Adult and Mental Health Specialisation

The University of Essex has announced a pioneering new programme — the Integrated Master of Science (MSci) in Nursing — set to begin in October 2025. This innovative four-year programme offers students a dual award in Adult and Mental Health Nursing, making it one of the most comprehensive nursing courses available in the UK.
Designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge to excel in both fields, the course aims to produce versatile healthcare professionals capable of addressing complex physical and mental health needs. The programme offers a blend of theoretical study and clinical practice, preparing students to work in a wide range of healthcare settings.
A Dual-Focused Nursing Programme: Adult and Mental Health
The University of Essex’s Integrated MSci in Nursing is designed to provide students with extensive knowledge and skills across both adult and mental health nursing. The first three years of the course focus on a student’s chosen field of nursing, either adult or mental health. However, students will have the option to transfer to the MSci pathway towards the end of their third year, allowing them to gain expertise in the alternate nursing discipline during the fourth year.
The programme equips students with the ability to deliver holistic care, addressing complex physical and mental health needs in various healthcare settings. This versatility positions graduates as highly sought-after professionals in the healthcare industry.
Course Structure: Theory and Clinical Practice
The Integrated MSci in Nursing follows a structure of three terms per year, with a 50:50 split between academic theory and hands-on clinical practice. This balance ensures that students not only acquire theoretical knowledge but also gain practical experience, preparing them to excel in real-world healthcare environments.
The clinical practice portion includes placements across a range of settings, including primary and secondary care, public and private sectors, acute care, and specialist services. Students will have the opportunity to work with service users in adult, elderly, and mental health contexts. The focus is on service-user-centred care planning, ensuring that students are fully prepared to address the holistic nature of health and illness.
During clinical placements, students are expected to work full shifts equivalent to a 37.5-hour week. This includes early, late, and night shifts, as well as weekend and bank holiday work. While in placement, students are assigned a Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor to guide their learning and ensure they meet the necessary standards of care.
Attendance is compulsory, and all modules must be successfully completed for students to qualify for professional registration as nurses.
